One minute of history

One of the first aerial photographs taken by kite was taken on our beach in 1887. By 1904, the foreshore was covered with curious contraptions called ‘aéroplages’, the ancestors of sand yachts. Let's not forget the first aeronautical trials in the dunes stretching as far as Merlimont at the same time. In 1987, 100 years later, kite enthusiasts with a love of the great outdoors gathered on the beach at Berck-sur-Mer to fly their ‘strange canvas birds’.
The tradition was born, and year after year, these ‘Rencontres’ attracted more and more enthusiasts and spectators, becoming one of the most renowned events and one of the world's major gatherings for the discipline.

Like a magnet, Berck beach continues to attract thrill seekers and freedom lovers. The freedom to fly a kite, whether small, large or giant. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced kite flyer, the most important thing is to get away from it all, have fun and share a return to simple pleasures with family or friends.
Every day in spring, there is always at least one kite flying in the sky above Berck-sur-Mer when you take a walk there.
When you visit the resort, you will discover, as part of the summer programme, a few friends, teams and kite-flying associations, including the Berckite Club, who get together for a weekend to train, entertain themselves and colour the sky.
They will set up some large kites on the beach and indulge in a few demonstrations of their art, performing ballets and precision choreography with their competition kites. You will be impressed and amazed.
